Satyricon: Moonlit Nights (1983)
In 2000, I decided to re-establish Satyricon/Shepherd Moons.
Almost 10 years had passed after the split of the last Satyricon group in 1991.
At that time, I was sick and tired of stone-age rock music and sloppy song
writing like in the 1980’ies. But in 1994, something marvellous happened:
Nirvana. Unfortunately, it took me 6 years to understand that Nirvana had
revitalized rock music. In 2000, at long last I finally decided to go back to
my old trade, playing rock songs and bass guitar. So I went looking for
musicians. And a new band name!
A Norwegian bunch of death metal madmen had used our name
Satyricon in 1991, so I had to come up with a new name for the band. After some
lengthy discussions, we settled on “Shepherd Moons” named after the two moons
keeping the stability of Saturn’s rings. The planet Saturn also sounded a bit
like Satyricon.
In 2001, the times had changed. New generations of arrogant young
musicians with a sky-high self-esteem and copycat songs dominated the music
scene. It was not the liberal 60’ies and 70’ies any more. Over a depressing
2-months period, I had several auditions for singers, guitarists and drummers.
The technically good musicians were plenty but most of them were unable to
follow the flow of the music without showing off all the time. On top of that,
many of the young musicians panicked, when they realized, that the band would
be a mixed age band. After two months, I was about to give up, when I met T.,
our first singer. She was an intellectual girl with a fantastic voice. Shortly
after T. joined the band, a guitar player Morten Jakobsen and a drummer Adam
Dicker were found, and the band went into existence.
Musicians and a new name was only the first step in the creation
of a new rock band in spite of me giving up on rock music back in 1991.
Satyricon of course had a long list of songs from 1974-1992. But I soon
realized that even a long list of songs would not be enough to secure new songs
of high quality for the band repertoire. Since the 1980’ies, I had only written
songs, when they came banging loudly on my door. I never sat down to write 12
songs for a new album. This was my way of writing rock songs for almost 20
years. This changed in 2001, when I launched a new tradition of writing 15
songs each year in the month of July in Finland. The first song collection was
a huge success seen from a songwriter’s point of view, and the tradition is now
well established, adding 2-3 new, good songs to the band repertoire every year.
This is the basis of the new Satyricon, the Shepherd Moons.
Satyricon had always been a project band. This is also the case
with Shepherd Moons. After one year, T. left the band, and we rushed to get a
new singer. Thomas Vilhelm replaced T. in 2003, but decided to become a
journalist at the end of the year and left too. In 2004, we started working
with the singer Jesper Brix who is still with us. In 2005, the sax player Morten
Hansen became an associate member of Shepherd Moons, much to our delight.
Flemming Olsen plays the drums. In 2006, Gitte Lund joined us to share the lead
vocals with Jesper and me.
The songs of Shepherd Moons can be divided into four categories:
Songs from Nekropolis back in 1974, original Satyricon songs from 1974-1980,
newer Satyricon songs from 1989-1992 and the new breed of songs from 2001 and
later. The Nekropolis songs in our repertoire sound a bit like Satyricon, which
is not surprising, as most of the Nekropolis songs were written in the same
year as the first Satyricon songs. The old Satyricon songs came in many
different styles, but the ones, which were chosen for the records, were mostly
advanced rock music or piano ballads. The Satyricon songs from 1989 to 1992
were love ballads with a jazz/blues feeling. The new songs from 2001 and
forward are primarily funk, blues, folk and Rock’n’roll, but include a number
of odd songs like At 25 and Pilot Light. All in all, a wide spectrum of styles
held together by an intellectual, sometimes mystic, angle to life, love and
politics. Blues, ballads, funk and Rock’n’roll are the soul of our music.
Shepherd Moons has been recording in 2003 (Bicycle Craze), 2004
(Puzzled), 2005 (Quicksilver Boy) 2006 (Home) and 2007 (Blues). We are using
the ARK studio
near the premises of NORDISC in Brønshøj, Copenhagen. Kristian Dalgaard is our engineer
and sound wizard.

In
October 1974, the bass player and songwriter Henrik W. Gade started writing a
row of new songs for his dream band ”Satyricon” with quite another profile than
the Danish romantic national rock of Nekropolis. A band inspired by American
Rock’n’roll and blues with texts playing with quotes from the rock history and
satirical attacks, a bit like what Elvis Costello did a couple of years later –
it must have been in the air at the time. The project band that still exists
and thrives today, had an over 7 years long birth, but finally made their first
album “Tavshed” (in Danish) in 1982 with the music to Gade’s first rock
musical.
Satyricon – now renamed Shepherd Moons –
has had many guest musicians during their more than 30 years of existence; to
mention a few Tonny Biilgreen, Morten Jakobsen and Michael Carlsen on guitar,
Peter Paluch, Henrik Ratje and Flemming Olsen on drums and Lisbet Hess, Sidsel From,
Louise Rasmussen, Peter Bom, T., Thomas Wilhelm, Jesper Brix and Gitte Lund on
vocals.
