Necessary Hardware and Software

Hardware

Computer: Windows PC with windows 98 or higher. The CD may run on a Mac or under Unix/Linux, but we cannot guarantee that all functionality works. Sound Board: The MIDI files are optimised for Creative Labs' Live Gold card or higher.

Software

Browser: Microsoft IE version 5.0 or higher. Reader: Acrobat Reader 4.0 or higher. Music Software: Microsoft Media player 9.0 or higher. For music books we recommend music software with editing capabilities, e.g. Digital Books™ A-Play, Cubase or Sibelius.

Using the Digital Book

The Digital Book is divided into two frames:

n     Frame 1: an Index with the document titles. Click the orange button to open the desired document. If you want to have more horizontal space to read the document, shrink the left frame with the mouse.

n     Frame 2: A Reading Window with the actual document contents. Scroll the lower controls with the mouse, if there are "missing" text or illustrations.

The Browser Menu is provided with BACKWARD and FORWARDS arrows, which allow you to scroll between the chapters, you have read.

Introduction

The eBook always opens with the Introduction document. This is a general introduction to the subject of the book, often including an in-depth technical description of e.g. the characters of the musical or the history of the songs.

Reading the Documents

Click on the orange button to choose a document and click inside the right frame with the mouse. You can now use the UP / DOWN arrows to scroll through the document. If the document is in Acrobat Reader format (the Acrobat Reader dialog appears when the document opens), you can also use the RIGHT / LEFT arrows to scroll from page to page.

Printing from Acrobat Reader: Acrobat Reader comes with its own printing dialog box. Click the icon in frame two to print the contents of the Acrobat file. Do not press CTRL + P or use the browser’s printing icon.

Read the Book vs. Print the Book: In the NORDISC Mental Aid series, you have the choice between a reader friendly web page (Read the Book) with full web support (hyperlinks etc.) or a printable Acrobat Reader file(Print the Book) with page numbers and the correct layout of the book (no support for hyperlinks).

Printing from a web page: Use the browser’s printing icon. Make sure that you have clicked in the Reading Window (frame two).

Searching in the text: Use the Find option by pressing CTRL + F. This works in both Acrobat Reader and web pages.

Zooming in Acrobat Reader: Use the page icons to enlarge or diminish the page. You can also use the zoom icon to gradually enlarge the page up to 1600%.

Hyperlinks: All web pages and some of the Acrobat Reader files supports hyperlinks. In the NORDISC Mental Aid series, the “Print the Book (PDF)” files do not support hyperlinks, even if the underlined, blue links are shown.

Multimedia

When you meet a media hyperlink, for example the old gramophone icon with the "Listen to the Notes", click the hyperlink and the Media Player should pop up to play the music.

When clicking on a link to a .PDF file, you return to the original document by clicking on the return button. Normally, you automatically return to the original page in the document, but in some cases, you must find the page manually.

Problems?

Digital Books are based on the latest multimedia computer technology. This should, according to tradition, mean chaos and breakdowns. And so it often does! Yet, do not despair! Here is a list of frequently asked questions, a so-called FAQ, which is a short but useful list for first time users of multimedia software!

There are no sounds coming from my computer!

Do you have a sound card in your computer? Is the sound card connected to the speakers? Are the speakers turned on? Does your sound card support MIDI files (most modern sound cards do). MIDI has a tendency to sometimes stop working without any obvious reason. If you have the correct MIDI setup, and no sound appears, anyway, boot your computer and start all over again.

The CD is doing something strange to my harddisk - it is working all the time!

The great number of notes and other illustrations take some time to load, but once they are loaded the harddisk should have its well-deserved rest. Please note, that you can still move around in the chapter with the mouse, though the computer seems to be busy!
